It was a clear day with a great deal of local cloud, this enabled us to carry out fighter affiliation under ideal conditions. Night flying training and compass tests were also carried out.
OPERATIONS. – MINING OFF THE FRISIAN ISLANDS.
Two aircraft were detailed to carry out the above operation with mines of 1500 lbs. They both successfully dropped their mines in the allotted area and the parachutes were seen to open. One aircraft had the bad luck to fly over two Flack Ships and received several hits in the fuselage, none of which were serious. No searchlights of enemy aircraft were encountered. The weather was clear and the visibility was good. Navigation was very good.

Many large fires and huge explosions were seen. Moderate and heavy A.A.fire, cooperated with searchlights were encountered. One aircraft was coned by searchlights but by violent evasive action eventually avoided them with difficulty. Some enemy aircraft were seen and two short combats took place, but no damage was sustained by our aircraft. The weather was clear and the visibility clear except for haze caused by the fires. Fourteen aircraft were detailed to attack the above targets with bombs of 2,000lb., 1,000lb., and incendiaries of 30lb. and 4lb.. One aircraft returned early as it was hit by A.A. fire in the fuselage, main-plane, and mid upper turret. The Flight Engineer made a really good effort to overcome the damage by hacking his way through the fuselage into the port wing to get at the petrol tank controls, which he then operated by hand. The remainder of the aircraft dropped their bombs in the target area. The BREUIL STEEL WORKS was very badly damaged and appeared to have the roof missing. Large fires and huge explosions were seen in the target area. An aircraft captained by P/O A.SEDUNARY, lost the starboard outer propeller, just before bombing. He carried out his bombing successfully and returned to base. At the beginning of the attack a little light and heavy A.A. fire and one searchlight were encountered, but as the attack progressed the Defences were thoroughly disorganised. There was no cloud in the target area and visibility was excellent, except for smoke from our flares. Navigation was very good.

On the return the fires could be seen at the Dutch Coast. Heavy, moderate and light A.A.fire co-operating with searchlights and one aircraft was slightly hit by heavy A.A. fire. This was a very good attack, very large concentrated fires being seen, the glow of which was visible 30 miles away from the Dutch Coast. The defences were considerably stronger than the previous attack, both moderate and heavy A.A.Fire was encountered and two aircraft were slightly hit. Some enemy aircraft were seen and one short combat took place but no damage was sustained by our aircraft. The weather was good although smoke from the fires obscured ground detail. Navigation was very good. The missing aircraft was Stirling Mk.111 EH902 captained by F/S. Bluck.

OPERATIONS. ATTACK AGAINST TARGETS AT GELSENKIRCHEN
Eleven aircraft were detailed to attack the above targets, .with incendiary bombs of 30lbs. & 4lbs. One aircraft failed to return and the remainder successfully dropped their bombs in the target area. Owing to 10/10ths. cloud it was difficult to estimate the effectiveness of the attack, although the glow of fires, below the clouds, could be seen over a large area. Bothe moderate and heavy A.A. fire co-operating with searchlights was encountered, but were ineffective. Sgt. Burley’s aircraft sighted an unidentified aircraft from astern, the Stirling corkscrewed and the Mid-upper & Rear Gunners opened fire. The unidentified aircraft was seen to dive to the ground and a fire & flash were seen. The aircraft was claimed to be destroyed. Some enemy aircraft were seen and three short combats took place but no damage was sustained by our aircraft. It was very cloudy in the target area and visibility was poo. Navigation was good. OPERATIONS. MINING OFF THE FRISIAN ISLANDS.
Two aircraft were detailed to this operation with Mines of 1,500lbs. which were successfully dropped in the allotted area and the parachutes were seen to open, No A.A.Fire, searchlights or enemy aircraft were encountered. It was hazy in the mining area although the visibility was fairly good. Navigation was very good.
OUTSTANDING EVENTS
TRANSFER OF SQUADRON
The squadron was moved to R.A.F. Station, Mepal. (Satellite to Waterbeach). The Advance Party proceeded on the 27th. June 1943, the Main Party on the 28th. June, and the Rear Party on the 29th. June 1943. This was successfully carried out with the assistance of Motor transport provided by No.2 M.T. Coy. Cambridge.
OPERATIONS.
Operations have been restricted owing to the bad weather during the first part of the month and partly due to the squadron move which took place at the end of the month. Attacks have nevertheless been made against targets in the RUHR area, including WUPPERTAL, DUSSELDORF, MANNHEIM, and GELSENKIRCHEN. Mining operations have also been carried out in the GIRONDE ESTUARY and off the FRISIAN ISLANDS. From these operations eight aircraft have failed to return.
On the night of 19th./20th./ June 1943, during an attack on the Armament Factory at LE CREUSOT Sergeant Falloon G. a Canadian Flight Engineer, was in an aircraft which received a direct hit from a light A.A. shell, which burst inside the port main plane and shrapnel severed the petrol cock control cables and oil pipe line, which caused a large volume of oil to flow into the fuselage. He was unable to ascertain the source of the oil leak without entering the wing and in spite of the fact that the aircraft was still in the target area, he decided to cut a hole in the side of the fuselage in order that he could crawl into the wing. He made a hole in the metal about 2 feet with an axe, and crawled inside the wing and turned on the petrol pumps, and investigated the oil leak, which proved to be a punctured gun turret pipe line. He examined the landing gear, including the whole of the tyre for shrapnel cuts. The safe return of his aircraft was undoubtedly due to Sergeant Falloon’s resourcefulness and complete disregard for his own personal safety.
On the night of the 25th. / 26th. June 1943, the aircraft captained by Sergeant A. Burley, during an attack on GELSENKIRCHEN, sighted an unidentified aircraft from astern, the Stirling corkscrewed and the Mid/Upper and Rear Gunners opened fire. The unidentified aircraft was seen to dive to the ground and a fire and flash were seen. The aircraft was claimed to be destroyed.
TRAINING
This has been carried on as large a scale as weather conditions, operations and the Squadron move would allow. It has included Fighter Affiliation, cross country flights, and ground specialist training.
SQUADRON CREST
Air Vice Marshall R. Harrison, C.B.E., D.F.C., A.F.C., visited the Squadron on the 20th. June 1943 and at a ceremonial parade which took place at 1500 hours, presented the Squadron Crest to Wing Commander M. Wyatt. This crest is in a prominent position in the Officers Mess.
