OUSTANDING EVENTS
Many attacks have been made against targets in the RUHR, including the large scale raids upon DUISBURG, DORTMUND, DUSSELDORF and WUPPERTAL. Mining operations have also been carried out in the GIRONDE ESTUARY, off the FRISIAN ISLANDS, and off the WEST COAST of FRANCE. From these operations seven aircraft have failed to return.

On the night of 12/13th. May 1943 Stirling Mk.111 HK721 Captained by F/Lt. E.R.M APPLETON, whilst taking off on operations, failed to clear an obstruction at the end of the runway and crashed almost immediately afterwards. The aircraft caught fire, and unfortunately all of the crew with the exception of the captain and Wireless Operator were killed. The Captain received severe injuries and the Wireless Operator was also injured, both were admitted to hospital.

On the night 13/14th. may 1943 whilst attacking BOCHUM, Stirling Mk.1 BK619 captained by Sergeant J.L. MITCHELL, encountered a ME 110 which opened fire at 400 yards slightly below his aircraft. The Mid-Upper Gunner fired a medium burst and the enemy aircraft was seen to burst into flames and pass beneath the Stirling. The Rear-Gunner fired a further long burst at 300 yards and the enemy aircraft was seen to turn on its back and dive, hit the ground and explode.

TRAINING.
Ground and air training has been carried out, on as large a scale as operations would allow. Particuar attention has been given to fighter affiliation, abandoning of aircraft, Dinghy Drill, and ground specialist training.
At 01.00 hours on the 17th. May 1943 1943, Sergeant L.C.Wright was carrying out a cross country fight in Stirling Mk.1 BF398, when the starboard outer and port outer engines failed. The aircraft lost height and the Captain ordered the crew to bale out, this included a passenger AC1 BAILEY, R.G. Of the crew who baled out, all landed safely with the exception of Sergeant A.J.Francis, who was reported missing and found four days later. The Captain remained at the controls, as the aircraft was in the vicinity of the Town of STOKE-UPON-TRENT and it appears that rather than crash land over the town, he attempted to land in the nearest field, the aircraft crashed however, and he was killed. The MAYOR of STOKE-UPON-TRENT has been in communicaton with the Squadron, and expressed his admiration, shared also by the townspeople, for the gallentry displayed by Sergeant L.C. WRIGHT.

DECORATIONS – IMMEDIATE.
NZ414263 Sergeant HERBERT JAMES DALZELL was awarded the DISTINGUISHED FLYING MEDAL. He has completed fifteen successful operational sorties, mostly against strongly defended GERMAN targets. On the night 20/21st. April 1943 he was Captain of an aircraft attacking ROSTOCK, which was damaged by collision with another aircraft. His aircraft was damage in the fin and rudder, giving temporary loss of control, although he was flying at only five hundred feet, he managed to right the aircraft and prepared himself for the most flight of four hundred miles back to base. Even though the rudder controls were jammed he reached base and made a perfect landing.

Pilot Officer PETER JOHN BUCK was awarded the DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS. He has completed twenty-six operational sorties and has shown great determination and courage in his attacks, which have mostly been against heavily defended targets. On the night 26/27th. April he was Captain of an aircraft attacking DUISBURG, which encountered, and was severely damaged by. An enemy fighter. The rear gunner was mortally wounded, and the rudder and tail were damaged He evaded the fighter, and commenced a three hundred miles flight back to base. The aircraft was rapidly losing height as the starboard engine had failed, and was difficult to control owing to the useless rudder controls. However, he gave orders for all movable objects to be jettisoned, and with careful pilotage and determination height was maintained, and the aircraft returned to base, where a perfect crash landing was made.

Pilot Officer JOHN HENRY SYMONS was awarded the DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS. He was W/T Operator in the previously  mentioned aircraft, captained by Pilot Officer P.J.Buck. In the attack by the enemy fighter , he was wounded iin the right hand, which caused considerable pain. This however, did not deter him from assisting in the jettisoning  of movable objects in order to maintain height. Afterwards he returned to work his set as other navigation aids had failed. In spite of his wound he used his right hand to tap out messages throughout the remainder of the flight. This enabled the aircraft to be guided by the shortest route back to base. His courage and attention to detail in this work assisted his captain to save the lives of his crew.

NON-IMMEDIATE.
Acting Flight Lieutenant LEO GEORGE TROTT was awarded the DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS.
Flying Officer DUGALD LOUIS POPPELWELL was awarded the DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS.
Flying Officer WILLIAM JOHN SCOLLAY was awarded the DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS.
