The Waugh crew posing in front of ND801 JN-V ‘Get Sum Inn’ prior to their final Op to Mersburg on the 6th December 1944. Far right back row is Collin Woontan, Navigator and second from left is the crew’s Flight Engineer Sgt. N. Southgate. Front row right is Thomas Waugh, Pilot.
What is also very interesting about this photograph is that it shows both pieces of nose art. as well as ‘Get Sum Inn’ first shown in the crash photo at the foot of the page, obliterated in the crash is the extra art – the word ‘Astra’ and a white star.

On arrival ND801 was actually coded JN-A, but after requiring repair, following a strafing attack by German fighters on the airfield at Mepal, she was withdrawn for repairs and recoded JN-X prior to her first Operational flight. The Orb indicates that she was probably, consistently lettered as ‘X’ throughout her stay with the Squadron. On the 3rd February 1945 ND801 crashed on landing, over running the runway and crashing into a chicken shed and bakers van – this was her 86th Op.

Interesting I see that Dad did a couple of missions on this plane. The one where he was mining an Oslo Fjord (mission 75) he told me that the was a flight of about 5 aircraft. His plane had mechanical problems so was delayed about 45 mins. So they flew solo all the way there and back. When they got back I think they were the only one out of 5 to return.
