 2.9.43
TRAINING.
After the completion of air firing, air tests and night flying tests we prepared for night operations.

OPERATIONS. MINING OFF THE FRISIAN ISLANDS.
Five aircraft were detailed to carry out the above operation with mines of 1500lbs. One aircraft returned early owing to a navigational failure, and brought its mines back. The remainder, however, successfully dropped their mines in the allotted area, although the parachutes were not seen to open owing to 4/10ths cloud. No A.A. fire or searchlights were encountered. One unidentified aircraft was seen and a short combat took place, but no damage was sustained by our aircraft. The weather was good on the outward route, but fog and patchy cloud was prevalent in the mining area. Navigation was very good.

OPERATIONS. MINING OFF THE ILLE-DE-RE.
Two aircraft were detailed to carry out the above operation with mines of 1500lbs., which were successfully dropped in the allotted area, and the majority of the parachutes were seen to open. No A.A. fire, searchlights or enemy aircraft were encountered. There was 7-8/10ths [cloud] in the mining area, although visibility was fairly good. Navigation was excellent.

 3.9.43
TRAINING.
Training consisted chiefly of air firing, but air tests and night flying tests were also carried out.

OPERATIONS. MINING IN THE GIRONDE ESTUARY.
Five aircraft were detailed to carry out the above operation with mines of 1500lbs. They all successfully dropped their mines in the allotted area, and some of the parachutes were seen to open. A few searchlights and A.A. guns were encountered, but were ineffective. One enemy aircraft was seen but no combat took place. There was a clear sky in the mining area and visibility was good. Navigation was very good.

 4.9.43
TRAINING.
One air sea rescue search was carried out by F/Sgt. J. MEE and crew, but no results were observed. The weather was good for day flying, and training consisted of height and load tests, air to sea firing, air tests, high level practice bombing and fighter affiliation.

OPERATIONS. MINING OFF THE FRISIAN ISLANDS.
Two aircraft were detailed for the above operation, but it was cancelled owing to adverse weather.

 5.9.43
TRAINING.
After the completion of air tests and night flying tests we prepared for operations.

OPERATIONS. ATTACK AGAINST TARGETS AT MANNHEIM.
Nineteen aircraft were detailed to carry out this operation with incendiary bombs of 30lbs and 4lbs. One aircraft had trouble shortly after take-off, and was forced to jettison its bombs four miles north of CAMBRIDGE. The attack was well concentrated and large fires together with heavy explosions were seen. Moderate heavy A.A. fire co-operating with searchlights were encountered, which were ineffective. One aircraft was hit by A.A. fire as returning, near the French coast, it received considerable damage and two of its engines were made unserviceable. The English coast was reached however, and it belly-landed at HUNSDEN. Fighters were seen and some combats took place. The aircraft captained by F/Sgt. W.H. BATGER sighted an enemy aircraft on the port quarter, the enemy aircraft opened fire and our aircraft corkscrewed. The mid-upper and rear gunners then opened fire and the enemy aircraft was seen to dive to the ground in flames. It was claimed as destroyed. Our aircraft received considerable damage, and the Flight Engineer was seriously wounded. The aircraft captained by F/Sgt. R. WHITMORE sighted an enemy aircraft 100 yards astern, the mid-upper and rear gunners opened fire, the enemy aircraft was then seen to turn over and spin into the ground afire. It was claimed as destroyed. This was followed by another enemy aircraft approaching from starboard to port astern, the mid-upper and rear gunners again fired and the enemy aircraft broke away. One minute later an unidentified aircraft was seen firing at a Lancaster aircraft, which was afire. F/Sgt. R. WHITMORE’s mid-upper and rear gunners opened fire on the enemy aircraft which disappeared. The Lancaster aircraft was then seen to break up. Some cloud was encountered on the way to the target, but there was a clear sky and visibility was good in the target area. Navigation was very good. One aircraft failed to return, it was captained by F/Sgt. WILKINSON, E.S.

 6.9.43
TRAINING.
No flying was carried out and aircrews were given a stand-down.

After the completion of night flying tests we prepared for night operations.

OPERATIONS. ATTACK AGAINST TARGETS AT BOULOGNE.
Seventeen aircraft were detailed to attack the above targets. They carried their maximum bomb load in bombs of 1,000lbs and 500lbs. One aircraft crashed whilst taking off and two returned early. The remainder successfully dropped their bombs in the target area. Very little fires were seen, but numerous huge explosions were observed in the target area. Some heavy and light predicted A.A. fire and a few searchlights, were encountered but caused no trouble. Some enemy aircraft were seen but no combats took place. The weather was good and visibility was clear except for slight ground haze. Navigation was excellent. The aircraft which crashed during take-off was captained by F/O. I.R. MENZIES. Whilst taking off it swung off the runway and crashed into two houses on the far side of the perimeter track. It caught fire almost simultaneously, and in the fire various bombs exploded, and the aircraft was a total wreck. Three members of the crew were killed [F/O. I.R. Menzies, P/O. N.H. Gale, Sgt. A.L. Mellor], a W.A.A.F. officer of R.A.F. Station, Mepal [S/O. J.M. Easton] was killed, and an Aircrew Sergeant [F/Sgt. P.G. Dobson] was killed, both of the latter whilst rendering assistance. In addition two civilians were killed and others injured.

Owing to adverse weather conditions only air tests and local flying was carried out.

OPERATIONS. ATTACK AGAINST TARGETS AT FRANKFURT.
Sixteen aircraft carrying various bombs were required for the above operation, but it was cancelled in the afternoon.

OPERATIONS. MINING OFF THE COAST OF DENMARK.
Two aircraft were required to carry out the above operation with mines of 1,500lbs., but it was also cancelled.

 10.9.43

Seventeen aircraft were detailed to attack the above targets with bombs of 1,000lb. and incendiaries of 30lb. and 4lb. One aircraft failed to take off, but the remainder successfully dropped their bombs on the target area. This was a good concentrated attack, large fires and heavy explosions being observed. Smoke from the fires was rising to a height of 12,000ft. Inaccurate heavy A.A. fire from a few guns was the only opposition, and no enemy aircraft were encountered. There was 5/10th. cloud over the target but visibility was nevertheless good. Navigation was excellent.

 16.9.43
TRAINING.
Night flying tests were the order of the day in preparation for more operations.

OPERATIONS. ATTACK AGAINST TARGETS AT MODANE.
Nineteen aircraft were detailed to attack the above targets with bombs of 1,000lb. and incendiaries of 30lb. and 4lb. One aircraft returned early, but the remainder dropped their bombs in the target area. This was a very successful and well concentrated attack. Large fires which appeared to be spreading and heavy explosions were seen. Some A.A. fire co-operating with searchlights were encountered, they were ineffective except for one aircraft which received damage. The port inner engine caught fire but was put out with the aid of a fire extinguisher, the propellor was feathered and the aircraft continued its journey on three engines. A few enemy aircraft were seen and the aircraft captained by P/O. G.K. WILLIAMS had a combat with a JU 88 which was claimed as destroyed. One other short combat also took place but no damage was sustained to our aircraft. It was clear over the target and visibility was good. Navigation was very good.

Twenty aircraft were detailed to carry out the above attack[s] with bombs of 1,000lb. and incendiaries of 30lb. and 4lb. Three aircraft returned early, but the remainder dropped their bombs in the target area. This was a very successful and concentrated attack. Numerous fires which appeared to be merging into one large fire were seen, and were still visible as the aircraft were returning across the DUTCH coast. Heavy A.A. fire and a great number of searchlights were encountered, but proved ineffective. Several enemy aircraft were seen and one of our Stirlings was hit but did not see the attacker, damage was received to the tail and main-planes, and the port petrol tanks were punctured. The aircraft, however, was safely flown back to base and a crash landing was made on three engines. It was clear over the target and visibility was excellent. Navigation was very good.

23.9.43
TRAINING.
After the completion of night flying tests, we again prepared for operations.

OPERATIONS. ATTACK AGAINST TARGETS AT MANNHEIM.
Eighteen aircraft were detailed to carry out the above operation with incendiary bombs of 30lb. and 4lb. Three aircraft failed to return, but the remainder successfully dropped their bombs in the target area. This was, undoubtedly, a good attack, large concentrated fires which were spreading to the west, and some heavy explosions were seen. Moderate heavy A. A. fire and a large curtain of searchlights were encountered, but caused no trouble. Enemy aircraft were very active and some combats took place. The aircraft captained by W/O. P. MOSELEY had a combat with a JU88 which was claimed as probably destroyed. In the action our aircraft received damage, the Pilot and Mid-upper Gunner were slightly injured. The aircraft captained by P/O. A. BURLEY had three combats with enemy aircraft, one of which was claimed as destroyed, the other two as damaged. The aircraft captained by P/O. J. MITCHELL had a combat with a FW190 which was claimed as damaged. The weather was good with clear visibility. Navigation was excellent. The missing aircraft were Stirlings Mk.III BF459 captained by P/O. C. C. LOGAN, EH946 captained by F/Lt. G. TURNER, and EH935 captained by F/O. L. KIRKPATRICK.

The above consisted of height and load tests, fighter affiliation, and night flying tests.

OPERATIONS. ATTACK AGAINST TARGETS AT HANOVER.
Sixteen aircraft were detailed to attack the above targets with incendiary bombs of 30lb. and 4lb. Two aircraft failed to return and one returned early owing to its rear turret being unserviceable. The remainder dropped their bombs in the target area. This was an exceedingly successful and well concentrated attack, considered to be even better than the previous one. Numerous large fires and columns of smoke rising to 12,000 ft., were seen, and the fires were again visible at the Dutch coast. Very moderate, ineffective heavy A.A. fire and numerous searchlights and flares were encountered. Many enemy aircraft were seen and several combats took place, the aircraft captained by F/Sgt. HORGAN, D. had a combat with a JU88 which was claimed to be destroyed. The aircraft captained by F/Sgt. BURTON, H. sighted a JU88 and the Rear Gunner fired, it was then seen to fall in flames and was claimed as destroyed. Two other short combats took place and one of our aircraft received slight damage. The weather was poor on the outward and return journeys, but good with clear visibility over the target. Navigation was very good. The missing aircraft were Stirlings Mk.III, EF515 captained by Sgt. MARTIN, R., and EH877 captained by F/Sgt. WHITMORE, R.

OPERATIONS. MINING OFF THE FRISIAN ISLANDS.
Two aircraft were detailed to carry out the above operation with mines of 1,500lb., which were successfully dropped in the allotted area, and the parachutes were seen to open. This was an uneventful trip, no A.A. fire, searchlights or enemy aircraft being encountered. There was 10/10th. cloud and rain, which caused visibility to be poor in the mining area. Navigation was excellent.

OPERATIONS. ATTACK AGAINST TARGETS AT STETTIN.
Fourteen aircraft were required for the above operation, but [it] had again, to be cancelled owing to adverse weather conditions.

OUTSTANDING EVENTS.

TRAINING.
Adverse weather has considerably restricted training, on occasions when it has been suitable, we have been detailed for operations, and therefore it has only been possible to carry out the usual tests.

OPERATIONS.
The Squadron has operated on thirteen nights this month, and raids have been made against BOULOGNE, MONTLUCON, MODANE, HANOVER, and MANNHEIM, the latter two, each having been visited on two occasions. Mines have also been laid in the GIRONDE ESTUARY, off the FRISIAN ISLANDS and off ILLE-DE-RE. One of the main features of the opposition has been the great activity of night fighters. They have been dealt with in such a manner as to bestow great credit on the crews taking part. In the combats claims have been made for seven aircraft destroyed, and three damaged. From operations carried out, six aircraft have failed to return.

On the 8th. September 1943, whilst taking off for a raid on BOULOGNE, the aircraft captained by F/O. I. R. MENZIES swung off the runway and crashed into two houses on the far side adjoining the perimeter track. It caught fire almost simultaneously and in the fire various bombs exploded, causing the aircraft to be a total wreck. Three members of the crew, a W.A.A.F. Officer of R.A.F. Station, MEPAL, an aircrew Sergeant, and two civilians were killed, and other civilians were injured. The W.A.A.F. Officer and the aircrew Sergeant lost their lives whilst trying to render assistance.

DECORATIONS. (IMMEDIATE).
The CONSPICUOUS GALLANTRY MEDAL was awarded to Pilot Officer O. H. WHITE, and the DISTINGUISHED FLYING MEDAL to Sergeants C. A. WORLEDGE and T. J. COLLINS, for gallantry and devotion to duty whilst taking part in a raid on BERLIN, on the night 23/24th August 1943.

The DISTINGUISHED FLYING MEDAL was awarded to Flight Sergeant W. D. WHITEHEAD.
